Jewellery Care

Simple habits that keep fine jewellery looking as it did on the first day.

Daily wear

Put jewellery on last, after perfume, hairspray and cosmetics, and take it off first. Remove rings before the gym, gardening, cleaning and swimming — chlorine attacks alloys.

Cleaning

Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush restore most of the brilliance people pay a jeweller for. Rinse and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners on emeralds, opals, pearls and any treated stone.

Storage

Store pieces separately in soft pouches. Diamonds scratch every other gemstone — and each other — when jewellery is kept loose in one box.

Check-ups

Have prongs and settings checked once a year, particularly on rings worn daily. A loose prong found early costs a re-tip; found late it costs a stone.
